Art as Sport

Untitled nudes drawn at Austin Visual Arts Association, Terrence Moline, 2009-2010

Drawing nudes is art in action.
It’s not the same as sitting in a studio and drawing.
For me, it’s more like a competition with myself.
The parameters are set.
I only have a minute to draw this person or,
I have a minute to capture the essence of this motion.
I don’t have time to erase or think about how I need to approach the subject matter.
I just have to draw.
Fast.

Drawing live nudes is another way to put my skills to the test.

Mentally:
Trains me to ignore doubt and delusion.
There is no time to question if I like my work.
I hardly have time to analyze.
I only have time to draw.

Physically:
Teaches me how to see things and forces to development of methods to get information down quickly.
I have to communicate with economy.

It’s a great challenge, a mental battle, one of the best i’ve encountered in my life.
